How to Connect to PC without Power Adapter
You can power the hard drive using a desktop computer power supply (PSU) if you don’t have an external adapter. Here’s how:
Using a Standard ATX Power Supply:
-
Turn Off the Power Supply:
- If it’s already in a computer, shut down the PC first.
- If using a standalone PSU, make sure it’s unplugged.
-
Use a Molex or SATA Power Connector:
- For IDE Drives: Use a Molex 4-pin power connector (white plastic plug).
- For SATA Drives: Use a SATA power connector (flat black plug).
-
Power On the PSU:
- If the PSU is installed in a PC, simply turn on the PC.
- If using a standalone PSU, you need to jump-start it:
- Find the 24-pin motherboard connector.
- Use a paperclip or wire to connect the green wire (PS_ON) to any black wire (ground).
- This tricks the PSU into turning on without being connected to a motherboard.
-
Connect the USB to IDE/SATA Adapter to Your PC:
- Once the drive is powered, plug in the USB end of the adapter to your computer.
